This was almost certainly love, Rosy concluded sleepily when she woke the next morning, warmed by a sense of deep contentment. If it wasn’t, then what was it? She stretched out an arm to feel for Xander, but his side of the bed was bare. A sliver of light came through the curtains, enough to confirm she was alone. And then she heard the slam of a car door.

Instantly awake, she rocketed out of bed, registering, as she ran to the window, that Xander’s side of the bed had been straightened as if he had wanted to conceal the signs of their passionate lovemaking. Fumbling with the heavy curtains, she was in time to see his powerful SUV roar away.

Turning back to face the silence of the room, she felt her stomach plunge at the knowledge that he’d gone to solve that business problem. But he’d left without a word to her. That was how little she meant to him.

She found her beautiful dress, neatly laid out on a chair, together with the rest of her things. Xander must have done that. Surely he’d left a note too...?

No note. No text. No recorded message on her phone.

But that had been their arrangement. She’d always known Xander would keep to his schedule, regardless of what happened between them, and she’d accepted that. She could hardly pretend she didn’t know who she was dealing with. Xander Tsakis, beloved by the society gossip pages in countless magazines, had more rumours flying around than he could live up to in several lifetimes. Lock Up Your Daughters! had been one ugly headline. And in spite of Xander’s countless reassurances, she had to wonder now if that was true. Why should she be any different to the rest?

Humiliation made her cheeks burn red. He hadn’t even paused to say goodbye. Yes, they’d both been hungry for sex, and yes, they’d both feasted. But now that was done, it seemed she was done too—Xander was done with her.

For goodness’ sake! She was not done. She’d been an equal partner in last night. What did she expect from him now—a love letter? Dear Rosy, thank you for the— For the what? Fabulous sex? Accept they’d both had a great time, and get on with your life.

Get on with my life...?

My life is here. And my life is good. Nothing can spoil that.

So why did her heart ache like this? If last night was all they had, she’d take it and move on.

What came next?

Practical matters had always helped to get Rosy through a crisis. So she’d straighten her spine, take a shower...get dressed.

And then? And then she’d get out of here.
